| 10.18 E | “Your [Shaman] friend thinks it was [Partial Reconstruction]. All the little pieces kept reattaching themselves, which meant I didn’t even have to graft a limb. And I had some splendid limbs. Where are my manners? Bowom, [Doctor].” |
| 10.18 E | Bowom whispered, then shook his head. He gave her a kinder look as he leaned on the side of the vat. Erin decided she was too grateful to be embarrassed; she couldn’t object to having her life saved. The [Mad Doctor] nodded at Erin. |
| 10.18 E | Erin blinked at Bowom, then began to chuckle. He grinned at her, and she started laughing, then stopped because she saw Ulvama stir. |
| 10.18 E | Bowom digested the entire statement, and the smile that had never left his face grew and grew. |
| 10.18 E | She sometimes forgot that Skill even existed. But that might also explain how fast she’d woken up. Bowom tapped his chin thoughtfully. |
| 10.18 E | The who? Erin was about to ask, but then Bowom opened the doors, and Erin got her first view of the Fraerling village. That was enough for a moment. |
| 10.18 E | No. Wait. How was she seeing all this? Erin was sitting in her gel-basin, not peering over Bowom’s shoulder. She shouldn’t have been able to see the entire street from here, let alone at this distance, without pristine night vision. |
| 10.18 E | Yet…it was like her vision of the buildings beyond zoomed and curved around Bowom’s shoulder. It felt like Erin knew the places, or sensed them. It was… |
| 10.18 E | Bowom shut the door before Erin could shout clarifications at him. Red-faced, she continued sensing the area beyond. And she could sense rather a lot. |
| 10.18 E | Erin sat there, processing this new ability, and then heard Bowom shouting into the night. |
| 10.18 E | Ulvama, amazingly, didn’t wake up as Bowom’s voice bounced around the village. Erin released her new power, but not before she sensed a Fraerling do a leap over one of the houses and come bounding this way. |
| 10.18 E | Erin Solstice sat on a little bench, a piece of carved wood, outside the Healer’s House. Or the Getwell Geode as Bowom had referred to it. She had some pale linen clothing on and a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She was sipping a rather tasteless broth that was what Bowom had prescribed her given her recovering body. |
| 10.24 E | Bowom the [Mad Doctor], Ulvama, Fraerling-sized, and a young [Healer] wearing a pot on her head and hiding behind what remained of an overturned table were the only people in the healing cottage. Or rather, what remained of it. |
| 10.24 E | Sound. The air was filled with other sounds. Erin was aware of distant shouting and Bowom speaking into his stone. |
| 10.24 E | She was trying very hard to shield Erin’s view of the chaos outside. The soothing tone was not helped by Bowom. The [Mad Doctor] grinned as he tossed the pot aside with a crash of broken pottery. He winced. |
| 10.24 E | He turned to the younger [Healer] poking her head out from behind the table, looking at Erin as if she were a Creler newly-hatched. Bowom was injured, Erin realized. The three-armed [Mad Doctor]—with a roach’s leg—had a bleeding forehead and several bruises already growing large on his body. |
| 10.24 E | “Aaah! No, no! No getting out of bed! No standing—Bowom! B—wait!” |
| 10.24 E | “This one’s actually just a crystal because it’s good for healing magic. But no one’s dead or crippled! Just, um, don’t do it again because Bowom didn’t tell me how to stop you. Only to hit you with whatever I could find, and I’m pretty sure there’s a 1% chance your insides explode out your mouth and ears if I do.” |
| 10.24 E | Now, it wasn’t that Ulvama was ignoring Erin…it was just that she had to step away from the cottage for a second. Bowom was getting it pushed back where it had been, and Erin had drifted off again. |
| 10.24 E | “Oh, fake arms, fake legs. We used to do that before Bowom became a [Mad Doctor]. These days, whenever someone loses a limb, he slaps one on. It’s usually better. I heard the big cities do replacement limbs or even regrow anything. Not enough magic here for it.” |
| 10.24 E | Erin didn’t stay in the wheelchair long. Not even all day. Bowom appeared after they finished pushing the crystal into place and grunted when he saw it was almost completely restored to normality. |
| 10.24 E | She cast a faintly accusatory glance at the [Healer], and Bowom laughed as he slapped her on the back again. |
| 10.24 E | Bowom made a face and turned to Erin. |
| 10.24 E | He strolled towards the door, and after a moment, Erin pushed herself up. She felt lightheaded and gritted her teeth as she stood—and almost activated [Reinforced Structure], but remembered she was healing. She stumbled after Bowom, and he eyed her critically. |
