Chapter Text
9.25 “Alright, then, Miss Navien, will you take the bar? Ishkr normally runs that. Three for the floor orders, two for the [Grand Theatre], and if two of you could help clean up…”
9.25 [Staff Manager of Cleaning], for instance. That was Navien. Barnethei had told her to take a visit to The Wandering Inn.
9.25 He could not replace the heads of each building. The good ones, at least. Navien was one such—losing her would be like losing a foot. A Level 30+ expert in the exact class that was needed—a [Head of Cleaning] as opposed to a [Cleaner]—was a very specific role that he’d be competing with Magnolia Reinhart and every major employer over.
9.25 In fact, she was so unguarded it seemed to make even the Haven’s staff curious. Alanna glanced up as Navien passed by, and the two shared a look for a second that seemed to last slightly longer than usual. Erin Solstice blinked at them, smiling, and then poked someone passing by.
9.25 Alanna looked alarmed and glanced at Navien. Erin laughed.
9.25 The Haven’s staff froze—until Navien raised a brooch hanging at her neck.
9.25 Well, it did have those. If anything, the one thing that felt familiar to Alanna and Navien and the others were the guests.
9.25 Erin Solstice laughed. Every head spun around. And there he was. Alanna actually jerked in her seat—because she hadn’t seen Ishkr come in. Neither had Liska, who was on a short break as Inkpage took over. She stared at Ishkr as the Gnoll placed two mugs of ale on the bar, and Navien nearly leapt over the counter.
10.41 T Navien teased him—the Head of Cleaning was one of the old guard, and she was someone who’d signed up to join his new inn. She was a [Staff Manager of Cleaning], Level 33. She could have been at the top of her own establishment or worked for nobility, but she was as excited as he was.
10.41 T She turned serious and patted a wand at her side. Larracel issued all employees with weapons—Navien had a Wand of Starry Shot, which fired, well, [Star Arrows]. The Haven had fought off [Bandits], even the Bloodfeast Raiders one time, and if they weren’t all [Marksmen], several dozen employees firing Tier 3 spells from behind Larracel’s barriers could kill almost any foe.
10.41 T “Well, she was a [Hunter]—we need some survivalists, Navien. I’ll tell her to put it somewhere while she works, though. Close to hand but not in the way.”
10.41 T “It’s not good! The Haven is far too heavy to lift without ambient mana! And in this area—adventurers, muster up! Who’s left? Navien, give me a list! I’m [Messaging] all of them!”
10.41 T He cursed and shoulder-charged out the door. Navien shouted at him.
10.41 T Decently crazy. That was the kind of compliment Larra almost never gave. Then the woman swung around pretended she wasn’t relieved and began harassing Navien about whether she was prepped for the new job.
10.41 T Navien was delighted, and they pestered Larra for details, which she shared. Barnethei was highly skeptical that Pisces had gotten that far, but she was fairly convinced Colth was telling the truth.
10.41 T Like a magical building spell, the idea had been to plop it down. An inn, already made! Well…Barnethei gazed up at the sign as Navien and a few of his staff began hammering the letters into place.
10.41 T He protested mildly, watching as Navien began setting up what would be the staff’s quarters, hauling out what seemed like a miniature doll’s house and stepping back as it expanded and grew. Larracel pursed her lips.
10.41 T “Alright, let’s get to work! Are those outhouses ready, Navien? We need to dig the latrines first. Then some scouting things out, walls, and I want our farmlands planted and ready to go! If, by chance, we run into customers, we’ll play it from there, but let’s assume we’ve got time.”
10.42 T [Sweep the Tables] from Paveca could clear half the tables filled with dishes instantly and deposit all the dishes in the kitchen, ready for washing. Navien, the [Head Cleaner], was even more impressive, and she had Skills in cleaning and management; she could use [Systematic Warfare: Shared Intelligence (Inn)]. What that meant was anyone in her team would see every stain, un-bused plate, waiting customer, or unattended cooking pot glow in their vision if someone had noticed it.
10.42 T Because of the lack of magic. It was a waste to have Navien spot-cleaning one area when she could normally have an enchanted broom and sweep across the entire Haven by herself. Similarly, Barnethei could man a bar, pour drinks, and clean taps—but normally he was a bit more magical.
10.42 T Nevertheless, Barnethei felt like the inn was doing well enough to expand and commented that to Navien.
10.42 T Barnethei’s white undershirt was rolled up to his elbows, and he was cleaning the mess off the bar as Navien swept around him with a mop. There was a liberal coating of dirt from the last group eating and drinking merrily in the common room; everyone was muddier thanks to the lack of roads and spring rains. But spirits were high.
10.42 T Navien made a face at him. She knew better than to cross swords with his instincts on a visitor’s background. Barnethei strode over, a complimentary plate of fresh garlic bread in hand. Thanks to The Explorer’s Haven retaining magic, they could have all the food they wanted.
10.42 T The fourth time Larracel’s Haven returned to Barnethei’s new inn for a refuel of mana and food, Navien practically dashed out to meet them.
10.42 T That night, Barnethei did his best to have the new staff feel welcome. They actually all ended up serving tables with the rush, and the boy, Illic, kept on his feet until after midnight when Navien noticed and sent him to bed with as much food as he could eat. Barnethei had to admit, Illic worked hard, and it warmed him to the lad.
