5.35 H  “The Tail of Xil. Silver-rank”
5.38  “You’re the Horns, right? We’re the Tail of Xil. Silver-rank, like your team. This is our first dungeon dive. I hear your team’s been challenging this dungeon from the start, is that right?”
5.38  The leader of the Tail of Xil’s team shouted at Fess as he strolled along with a pike propped on his shoulder. Fess turned unhappily.
5.38  The Drake took another step forwards and exploded. His body bulged and then overinflated like a burst flask. Ceria saw a red fountain, and felt something strike her in the face. She looked down and saw a chunk of scales and flesh fall from her cheek. The adventuring teams, the Tail of Xil, the Horns of Hammerad, and Griffon Hunt all froze.
6.09  Xil’s ears lowered. Erin stared in horror at him. That couldn’t be true. Could it? But his face—
6.09  She saw Lasica’s grin and Xil’s smile, then. Erin stared at them in astonishment as the old Gnoll and Drake woman chuckled.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  His name was Xil. And he was old. So old his bright feathers had lost some of their color. But he hadn’t lost much of his plumage. Orjin could mainly tell in the way Xil acted. He had fought in wars before Orjin had been born.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  His name was Xil. And he was old. So old his bright feathers had lost some of their color. But he hadn’t lost much of his plumage. Orjin could mainly tell in the way Xil acted. He had fought in wars before Orjin had been born.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  “What is the difference between him and me in the end, Xil? I beat him. But he would do better against an aerial opponent. The Death of Magic. Perhaps I was wrong to make light of him; I cannot fly.”
Interlude – Sand and Notes  Xil dismissed that with a flap of the wings. He turned over; he was resting in a little bit of shelter. Some leaves he’d attached to some sticks in order to make a safe haven from the heat. From there, he could watch his students training.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  He had six right now. More than usual. Orjin doubted Xil knew their names. The [Spearmaster] took pupils like other people drank water and if he remembered their faces, it showed they had real talent.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  “It concerns me, Xil. When Lacten returned, we beheld our weakness.”
Interlude – Sand and Notes  He moved. Xil’s staff shot at Orjin’s forehead, a flash of wood hard enough to shatter bone and pulverize Orjin’s brain.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  The Garuda missed. Orjin had leaned sideways, parrying the blow with a hand. It still stung. Xil smiled.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  Orjin grimaced. Another flaw. Xil shrugged.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  “…Yes. What is your point, Xil?”
Interlude – Sand and Notes  The [Spearmaster] tapped Orjin on the chest lightly with his staff. It was just a bit of wood, but he was deadly with it. He had no need for the enchanted spear he had used to set up his bivouac lean-to; a semi-permanent campsite these days. Xil gestured to his spear now.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  “I am not complaining that it is unfair, Xil. You have lighter bones. A different structure. I am asking how to make myself better.”
Interlude – Sand and Notes  He threw his staff like a javelin and one of the apprentices went flying. Xil sat down as the staff was brought back. Orjin sighed.
Interlude – Sand and Notes  Xil has a point, Strongest. But if I had to fight the Death of Magic, I would buy a flying artifact. Train with that. Your weakness isn’t the lack of the ability to fly—focus on your fighting techniques. And dodging. If I touched the Death of Magic and broke her magic shields—I would never let go.”
