10.18 E “My village is Dretonamis; right about here.”
10.18 E “Now that’s crazy. You’ll fit right in. Welcome to Dretonamis!”
10.18 E The village of Dretonamis might not have been a Fraerling city, but it was something. Erin saw her house, a giant geode carved out for the purposes of healing, was one of many set more or less along a street. The next house over was a giant stump hollowed out with little windows set with blown glass, aglow by night.
10.18 E The intense conversation the two were having had the effect, incidentally, of driving away Fraerlings dying to meet the new visitors. Erin and Ulvama were the first travellers to come to the village of Dretonamis in ages. They were a real, reclusive Fraerling village, apparently.
10.24 E That was her first real day in the Fraerling village of Dretonamis.
10.24 E And a Fraerling village was no glorious city, nor intrepid Fraerlings leaving their homes to see the world, both of which were most common for Goblins to have met. This was the wilds; the village of Dretonamis was exceptionally exposed to nature. True, it had cleared the nearby trees in a small area, but you’d miss this spot entirely from above. A good amount of living space for Fraerlings, complete with three-foot high walls would be utterly missed in this jungle which spanned so many countless miles. There was no magical forcefield or cloaking spells that Ulvama could see.
10.24 E And so, in this village of Dretonamis, he would have his chance. No one said it was impossible, only difficult. No one doubted it could be done, only what the cost was.
10.24 E Macnest nodded. He was an [Armorer], but he made his armor for whomever needed it; the entire village of Dretonamis was communal and bartered for most things. But that just made Erin’s smile wider. She jabbed a thumb at her chest.
10.24 E Eurise. Guardian of Dretonamis. Their Level 50 protector. His class? The same as older days in this village that had endured ages in isolation.
10.36 – Pt.1 On the thirty-eighth day in the Fraerling village of Dretonamis, Erin Solstice was eating a bowl of salad greens for lunch. She kept stopping mid-chew and frowning at her food. Her confusion kept mounting until Ulvama stopped feeding the Battle Hamster pieces of bread dipped in soup.
10.38 E The Fraerling village of Dretonamis. Even their clothing is fanciful to the imagination of Tallfolk in their cities. The strolling Fraerlings wear insect parts or pieces of nature converted to clothing. They have cloth and [Weavers], but no huge industry. No cows; a few Fraerlings ride ‘giant aphids’, which are big enough for the six-inch tall people to move around on. A hidden settlement of people that could be erased in a moment by the wrong monster or natural disaster.
10.38 E Yet Dretonamis has endured longer than most Walled Cities. Longer than many Fraerling cities. It is a pocket of the world that has passed through entire ages unnoticed and forgotten—which is how the inhabitants prefer it.
10.38 E There’s a chessboard in the center of it. The [Innkeeper] sits there. She’s wearing clothing of Dretonamis: grass fabric, woven sandals. Scars have faded on her, and her hair’s begun to regrow. But it remains discolored; the burns on her wrist and neck are still raw.
10.38 E Not taxing, but ‘at capacity’. That’s how Erin had thought of it. She could have done more—had done, to get this far. But when she’d finally gotten to Dretonamis, she’d discovered that finding food for herself and picking out a pillow to sleep on could take most of her day. Obviously, there was more than that—she talked to the local expert on furnishings, observing how they used aphid fuzz—which was really a weird, soft wax—to pad the surprisingly comfy pillows, and getting your own food in the village often involved gathering it.
10.38 E She was awake. The dream she’d had while she wasted time in Dretonamis was over.
10.38 E The [Shaman] knew bad things would always come, always, even after the worst. But dead gods, sometimes she hated thinking like a Goblin. Here in Dretonamis, you could almost forget it.
10.38 E …But there was nothing to kill. Nothing to fight in Dretonamis, beyond the odd monster or wildlife. No one knew they were here.
10.38 E Almost everyone in Dretonamis had hammocks. A brilliant cultural phenomena that Erin, of course, claimed Earth had. Ulvama doubted that. She hadn’t seen any hammocks in The Wandering Inn; the first time she had seen Erin in a hammock was when she had made one for transporting Erin. All this suggested to Ulvama that Erin was either lying or had no taste.
10.38 E The [Retired Explorer] was Dretonamis’ guardian and a Level 50+ person, making him exceptional no matter the species. It was apparently a rule that if you had a village, you had to have someone above Level 50 to guard it at all times.
10.38 E “Damn you Tallfolk. I forgot. Eh…everyone’s talking about the moon. There’s a Thinker’s Talk happening soon, but it’s just not that interesting in Dretonamis, usually.”
10.38 E “Trek or village? The trek isn’t that bad. It’ll take you three hours if you can run like Zemmy or Mera, but you’ve got the beetle. Slap a speed spell on it and you’ll get there, and I doubt most critters will tangle with it. As for the village…there’s always bees buzzing around and ants, so it’s a place where you have to scrap a bit more than Dretonamis. But it’s probably safer with all of Zinni’s herds around. I’m only where I can be; she can protect a lot more.”
10.38 E —Then again, when you had people like Bowom the [Mad Doctor] around, perhaps you did get stressed as the leader of Dretonamis. Everyone glared at the Fraerling, who folded his hands together innocently. He had a cockroach leg instead of his Fraerling right one.
10.38 E The two [Brawlers] stopped arguing who’d do the run there, and Ulvama’s ears perked up. Raiders? She recalled something about that, but it was fascinating to her now that she’d lived in Dretonamis a month.
10.38 E The appearance of Ulvama and Erin in Wyewesshi caused a stir unlike anything Dretonamis had experienced. Partly because—and Ulvama and Erin had not known this—Wyewesshi’s population was younger than Dretonamis’ by far, and larger.
