Chapter Text
1.26 R “What about Ceria and Sostrom? Why the hell aren’t they taking this thing out? We are a disgrace of a team.”
1.26 R Ceria and Sostrom were their [Mages]. The other man grimaced as he saw someone poke her head up, swivel around with her pointed ears twitching, then duck an arrow loosed by a skeleton holding a bow. It was more amazing that the filthy, corroded bow and string could even fire, but it did, and the arrow was weak and badly aimed—but it could still do a lot of damage.
1.32 R “This is intolerable. A good Runner shouldn’t be crippled. Ceria, Sostrom. Can’t you do something?”
1.32 R “What are we, Level 50? Calruz, healing magic is the stuff of [Archmages]. No chance a [Mage] can…hm. Well, it’s not anything ice-magic has anything to do with, so I’m useless, and so is Sostrom.”
1.36 He was right. Ryoka’s own germ knowledge made her clench her teeth—and the Minotaur already had a kettle going over a magical flame that the [Mage] Sostrom was producing with his staff.
1.39 R Sostrom Reidez, at your service, Miss Ryoka Griffin.”
1.39 R Sostrom.”
1.39 R Sostrom flushed lightly. He was in his early thirties or his very late twenties but unfortunately bald save for his eyebrows. He tugged his pointy hat lower on his head.
1.39 R She turned and walked out the inn. The three Horns of Hammerad exchanged a glance and then rose to follow her. They couldn’t tell what—but something had changed about Ryoka in the moments after Sostrom had repaired her phone.
1.39 R Except of course that there’s always someone watching. Ceria, Gerial, and Sostrom have come out of the inn to watch me, but I can see several Street Runners casually lounging across the street. Ready to follow and intercept? Most likely.
1.39 R Gerial and Sostrom edged away from Ryoka, and the other people on the street took one look at her and then hurried away. Ceria could only smile in astonishment.
1.39 R Ceria raised an eyebrow at Sostrom.
1.39 R She turned to Gerial and Sostrom and showed them the potion she was holding.
1.43 R His finger doesn’t even glow. Unlike when Sostrom repaired my iPhone, I can see no flash of magic. But magic does happen.
1.47 R Damn. I hate talking to people. No—that’s not exactly right. I hate talking to people in groups. Individuals are fine. Ceria’s fine, Garia’s fine…Sostrom is fine because he fixed my phone…
1.47 R So I smile, turn, and clasp hands with Gerial, Sostrom, and the other Horns of Hammerad as they get up from their seats. There are several people I don’t recognize, and they nod to me as Ceria and Gerial introduce them.
1.47 R And bodies like iron. Gerial looks around. One of the mages standing next to Sostrom nods.
1.47 R Sostrom nudges me on my right side and mutters loud enough for me to hear.
1.47 R There’s no malice in Yvlon’s tone. In fact, she’s been pretty above-board with me about telling me she knows Magnolia and all. And it’s probably a fair offer, considering adventurer levels and all that. Certainly none of the other adventurers—Gerial, Sostrom, etcetera are frowning. Only Calruz looks displeased.
1.48 R Sostrom and the other adventurers agreed while the adventurers that were part of the Flawless Flights shouted from their table across the hall. Cervial laughed and raised his hands and then looked at Ryoka.
1.48 R That remark came from Sostrom, and it was met with agreement from the other adventurers. Cervial nodded.
1.50 Erin smiled and walked off, already chatting to Sostrom and the [Ranger], Marian, from the Horns of Hammerad. Gerial eyed his plate, delighted at the glistening oil on his fat strips of bacon and the mounds of eggs and pieces of bread buried next to them.
1.50 Across the room, Gerial saw Sostrom choke on his drink as Erin addressed Calruz. The Minotaur frowned up at her as the Human girl smiled at him. Even sitting down, the Minotaur was nearly as tall as she was.
1.54 Sostrom!”
1.54 Sostrom made a face.
